No, I’m not getting forgetful. I know it hasn’t been that long since I discussed Wystone’s World Teas on these pages, but something’s changed at Wystone’s, and after a visit this week, I simply had to share the news that Wystone’s is now doing breakfast.
First, let me say that Wystone’s, as a place to learn about tea, enjoy tea, discover all the things you can do with tea, share tea with friends and embrace tea as more than a simple beverage has set a whole new standard in Denver. Which is not to put down any other tearoom. It’s simply that Wystone’s has eschewed the stereotypical English tearoom setting and style of other establishments and, as a result, has become a tearoom with universal appeal. You’ll see Red Hat groups along with teenagers, men, women, professionals, people hanging out with their laptops…the list goes on and on.
And the food is exceptional. Part of the reason for that is that they incorporate many of the teas into the food, and the results are astounding. So, I reasoned, if the formula’s worked so well before, I simply had to see what they were doing with breakfast.
Before I even got to the food, however, I had to satisfy my tea craving. This is a lot easier than it sounds because there are so many amazing teas on the menu. This time I decided to get really crazy, and selected the Matcha Latte. Picture a standard coffee latte but made with Japanese matcha green tea and steamed milk. Drinks like this could convert this inveterate coffee drinker in a heartbeat.
If I thought selecting a tea was a difficult task, choosing just one of the available breakfast items proved equally daunting. There’s something for everyone on this menu, from Belgian Waffles with strawberry sauce to Quiche Lorraine, to a Breakfast Burrito. Then there are the really tempting items like a Crab Cake Benedict, a French Toast Casserole of Texas toast with cream custard and a sweet vanilla glaze, a Salmon Sandwich with salmon and lemon-caper cream cheese on a toasted English muffin, and a Seafood Quiche with crab, shrimp, and smoked salmon.
The Capicola Benedict brought a delightful dish of toasted English muffins topped with Italian capicola ham and poached eggs, drizzled with a lightly spiced aioli. Accompanying the eggs was a side of superb oven-roasted potatoes infused with the flavor of a Kenyan black tea.
At the insistence of the waitress, I agreed to try the Cheesy Hominy and Chorizo Hash. She kept telling me it was the best thing on the menu, and I kept telling her I simply have never been a hominy fan. So, she brought out a taste, and I discovered I’ve never liked hominy because I’ve never had it prepared well before. This is one fantastic dish of hominy with onions, chorizo and capicola, blanketed with a mix of cheddar and gruyere cheese, and served with a side of spicy salsa.
Wystone’s serves breakfast daily until 11, and, on Saturday and Sunday until 3 in the afternoon.
